2 Days in Bran & Rucăr

Driving up from Bucharest (170 km)? Leave at 05:30–06:00 and you will reach Rucăr around 08:00–08:30. There is no need to wait for check-in: carry on to Bran and make the most of the morning, then settle into the house from 15:00. If you arrived the evening before, start the day with breakfast on the terrace looking out at the mountains.

40–45 minutes by car from Rucăr, on DN73 towards Brașov. Arrive early (before 10:00) to avoid the crowds. A full visit takes 1.5–2 hours: explore the medieval halls, Queen Marie's rooms and the inner courtyard with its mountain views. Parking costs around 15 lei.

There are several traditional restaurants near the castle. We suggest skipping the ones right next to it (touristy and expensive) and walking 500 m further into the village, where you'll find authentic food at fair prices. Local specialties: tripe soup (ciorbă de burtă), sarmale and local cheeses.

A short stop at the local market in Bran or Moieciu de Jos for fresh dairy: Bran cheese, smoked cașcaval, sour cream and whole milk straight from the producers. Prices are well below supermarket prices and the quality is in another league. Stock up for the evening.

About 30 minutes from Origini de Rucăr, this monument to the heroes of the First World War is impressive and often overlooked by visitors. A paved path leads up from the parking lot, and the panoramic view from the hill over Argeș County and the surrounding mountains is well worth the effort. Admission is free.

Head back to the house, fire up the barbecue in the gazebo and enjoy what you bought at the market. Sunset at 900 m, with Piatra Craiului in the background, is one of the most beautiful in the area. An evening fire in the 9,000 m² garden rounds off the first day perfectly.

Day two starts without any rush: coffee from the espresso machine, eggs cooked in your own kitchen, and the terrace in the morning light on Piatra Craiului. It's one of the reasons a private house beats any hotel with breakfast included.

15 minutes from the house, the Dâmbovicioara Gorges are one of the most spectacular natural sights in the area. Limestone walls rise 60–80 m on both banks of the river. The walk through the gorges takes 45–60 minutes there and back, is practically flat and suits the whole family. Stop at every bend: the view keeps changing.

Right at the end of the gorges, the cave can be visited with a local guide (often children from the village, who know every corner of it). It is lit and fitted out for visitors, and the temperature inside stays at 8°C, so bring a warmer layer. The stalactite and stalagmite formations are impressive. The visit takes 30–40 minutes.

Head back to the house for lunch. The fully equipped kitchen lets you cook at your own pace, with no fixed times and no reservations. Or have a picnic in the 9,000 m² garden looking out at the mountains, an experience in itself.

15 minutes from Rucăr, you reach the nearest Piatra Craiului trailheads. A 2–3 hour hike on the trails at the foot of the massif (blue triangle or red cross markings, easy to moderate) brings you out into alpine meadows with extraordinary views. The lower trails need no special mountain experience; boots or sneakers with good grip are enough.

The last evening in the mountains is best enjoyed slowly. At sunset the 32 m² gazebo at Origini de Rucăr becomes a magical place, as the orange light plays on the ridges of Piatra Craiului. A hammock, a book, a coffee: the best ending to a good weekend.
